Reading The Best Good Books For Kids

There are some popular good books for kids that have stood the test of time and are beloved by children all over the world. Libraries keep stock of these books and there are many lists devoted to keeping track of childrens favorite books.

For toddlers, Where the Wild Things Are, a book by Maurice Sendak, a writer and illustrator, has always been a favorite. About a boy named Max who sails to the land of Wild Things, monsters whom he befriends. Though first receiving negative reviews at first, children began checking the book out of the library constantly and repeatedly and the book soon received high critical praise.

Another famous book is Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. The story is about a child saying goodnight to the things in his room around him, ending finally with the moon.

For slightly older children, they may recognize some of the following as books they may have read in school or as favorite library books: Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends and Mark Twain's Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

Laura Ingalls Wilder's series about her life on the prairie has won awards, as well as the book Old Yeller, about a dog. They are enjoyed by both kids and adults and are considered classics.

Louise Fitzhugh's Harriet the Spy series and any book by Judy Blume have remained favorites with teenage audiences. Nancy Drew mysteries and the Hardy Boys series also stay popular with kids and teens. These can all be found at the local library.

And who could forget Roald Dahl, author of such wonderful books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach, both made into movies. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett has been read in classrooms all across the U. S., and is now a movie as well.
